My name is Christopher Gwen and I am the chief of interpretation and education at Gettysburg National Military Park. As many of you may have heard me joke before, I am still learning exactly what that means. I often remark that about 80% of my day is spent mired in bureaucracy, and on a particularly good day, I get 20% of what I would call history. So, this lecture is my 20% at least for the weekend. Thank you for being here. We have a lot to talk about and a lot to go over, so let's jump right into it. I would like to begin by taking you 25 years after the Battle of Gettysburg, on October 16th, 1888. Let's imagine that we are with the citizens of Gettysburg, along Taneytown Road and Baltimore Street. From their windows, front stoops, and offices that line those roads, they could see a parade of marching men heading south towards the battlefield beyond. By this time, 25 years after the battle, the sight of veterans returning to the battlefield had become common. It sparked curiosity, celebration, and perhaps even a twinge of sadness among the residents of Gettysburg. This particular parade was composed of the surviving veterans of the 136th New York Infantry, formerly of the 11th Corps of the Army of the Potomac. After a lapse of 25 years, these veterans had returned to the battlefield. The same soldiers who once defended the slopes of Cemetery Hill and the ridges south of town had now returned, accompanied by their children, grandchildren, wives, and other family members. As they looked out over the landscape, they saw a scene that closely resembled what they had encountered 25 years before. There...
